Would you like to work on the UK’s biggest, most high profile and most interesting business magazine?

We’ve won countless awards for our robust, news-focused and campaigning style of journalism and an opportunity has arisen for an ambitious and experienced journalist who’s seeking career progression/fulfilment to work on our main news desk.

The first aspect of this role is to write compellingly and authoritatively about all aspects of the hugely important, highly political and fast-changing food and drink market. Topics you’re likely to cover would include key developments among the leading supermarkets and suppliers, shopping trends, pricing and promotions strategy, e-commerce/online, the economy, technology, sustainability, property & planning, supply chain, marketing, financial performance, key people moves and more.

You’ll also have responsibility for commissioning and editing the news analysis section every week, for managing and mentoring reporters, and for deputising for the news editor.

In this role there’s a particular emphasis on news and news analysis, though there’s also lots of opportunity to write blogs, features and profiles, and you’ll also be expected to file stories for the web, and be able to use social media and other tools to maintain our award-winning and growing multi-media presence.

Knowledge of the food and drink sector is not essential but you must have a strong track record in trade/business news journalism, and have the personality, curiosity and intelligence to develop and work senior-level contacts.

The Grocer is the bible of the £200bn grocery sector, and the flagship title of the highly successful William Reed group, a family-owned publishing, events and market research business, whose interests include operations in the UK, France, Singapore and the US.

We’re based in newly refurbished offices near Gatwick, with its fast connections to London, Brighton and the world (recent trips have included Italy, Thailand, Ireland, Singapore).

The Grocer sets very high standards, and it’s a high pressure environment, with daily and weekly deadlines, but for the right candidate, it offers huge job satisfaction, a strong career path (it’s proved a fantastic breeding ground for developing talent and great journalism), a competitive salary, as well as company benefits including:

  • A contributory pension scheme
  • Life Assurance
  • 25 days’ holiday
  • Discounted gym membership
  • Free car parking
  • Season ticket loan (on successful completion of probationary period)
