Climate Home News has an opening for a deputy editor to join our award-winning team. 

Founded 10 years ago, Climate Home News is a leading independent media outlet covering the international dimensions of the climate crisis.

As deputy editor, you will work with a talented team to shape our coverage. The role involves a mix of reporting, commissioning, editing and developing strategic projects. 

This would be a good fit for a mid-career journalist looking to make an impact on the defining story of our time.

Help us to deliver the original, agenda-setting journalism that makes Climate Home News the go-to media outlet for a global community of thinkers and doers.

The team works remotely and gets together in the UK periodically for strategy sessions. There are opportunities for international travel.

Responsibilities 

  • Commission and edit articles from UK-based staff and freelance reporters around the world 
  • Contribute to reporting of news, analysis and investigations 
  • Manage special projects from concept to impact reporting 
  • Contribute to newsroom strategy 
  • Identify and pursue opportunities to further Climate Home's mission
  • Represent Climate Home at events
  • Line manage one or more members of the team 
  • Deputise for the editor as required 
  • Uphold journalistic ethics and good practice 

Essential attributes 

  • Ability to get to the heart of a story 
  • Clear and concise written English 
  • Ability to motivate, inspire and challenge colleagues to do their best work 
  • Ability to interact professionally and build a network of sources 
  • Excellent time management 
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends 
  • A keen interest in the climate crisis and news media innovation 

Desirable attributes 

  • Knowledge of climate change and diplomacy 
  • Contacts in the climate change policy, politics and finance space 
  • Fluency in languages other than English 
  • Experience of working in different countries and/or with international colleagues 
  • Data journalism experience 
  • Multimedia experience 

Education and experience:

  • At least five years of relevant experience as a journalist 
  • Bachelor, master's degree in journalism and/or NCTJ diploma
