We are looking for a deputy sports editor to join us at Reach working across both the Mirror and Express Online concentrating on US content. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a vital role in our newsroom. You will have a strong and proven track record in journalism producing exclusives for national papers.

Reach Plc is the UK’s largest commercial news publisher. We are home to more than 130 trusted brands, from national titles like the Mirror, Express, Daily Record and Daily Star, to local brands like MyLondon, BelfastLive and the Manchester Evening News.

Since the start of 2023, we have been building out our US operation, headquartered at 200 Liberty St, New York. We have launched three standalone brands in the Mirror US, Express US and the Irish Star, covering news, sport, entertainment, politics and lifestyle - all targeted at US audiences.   

We are now entering a period of rapid growth, and are looking to add ambitious and dynamic talent to our teams.

This role is office-based working from our New York hub, we are therefore open to candidates commutable to New York.

What will the role involve?

You will be joining a key team, crucial to growing an exciting part of Reach Plc's expansion, with a focus on US sports. NFL and NBA are just two sports at the heart of our coverage, with a spread of all the major players. Going out and getting original and exclusive content is valuable as we establish ourselves in an incredibly competitive market.

This means attending, planning for and executing live events, always with the mind of driving digital audiences to meet competitive team targets. It also means executing headlines to constantly bring in new readers while all the time wanting to bring them back.

You will deliver a fast turnaround on major news stories across the US and around the world and bring in exclusive stories that set us apart from our rivals. All while ensuring that every piece of content is researched and published in accordance with the Editor’s Code of Practice.


Who are we looking for?

An experienced journalist with in-depth knowledge of media law, you have a strong track record of delivering a wide range of engaging human interest and hard-hitting news stories at a national or major regional title while understanding what works for a digital audience.

You have first-rate editing, writing and subbing skills, and relish the test of working under pressure and to tight deadlines. You are social media savvy with current SEO knowledge and ideally you are familiar with newsroom analytics and content management systems. You are flexible, and inquisitive and are on the pulse of what makes a great story!
