About us

The Bristol Cable is shaking up local journalism, reporting on the stories behind the headlines and putting Bristolians in charge of their media. We publish stories that matter to the public not big business, uncovering injustice in our city. And we’re committed to amplifying local voices and compelling ideas.

There are huge issues with diversity in the media, and unpaid internships are part of the problem. Young people who get financial support from their families or can live cheaply in commuting distance from London are at a huge advantage. Meanwhile, people who can’t afford to work unpaid find it harder to get their foot in the door. This has a huge impact on the diversity of journalists in this country and the media produced.

With this in mind, we particularly welcome applicants who are from backgrounds currently under-represented in mainstream media.

This is why the Bristol Cable is excited to launch a new paid position for people looking to get into journalism.

The Role

We’re after somebody to join our early career journalism placement and work with us for five months in a paid role where you will make original journalism for the Bristol Cable – it could be articles, videos or podcasts, depending on your interests and experience. You will work alongside our small team of journalists to develop your skills, portfolio and networks as part of the Cable - a globally recognised pioneer in local journalism.

This is a fantastic opportunity to get stuck into producing journalism in the public interest. You won’t be expected to produce investigations, but will work towards creating media that is in-depth, challenging and highlights what’s really going on in Bristol.

No qualifications necessary just good ideas, a track record of journalism (be it on a blog/vlog, student newspaper, radio, journal, trade magazine, newspaper or other), and a strong desire to work in journalism.

  • You are fascinated by news and current affairs.
  • You love meeting people and sharing people’s stories.
  • You are committed to local journalism that holds the powerful to account
  • You want to tell original stories about Bristol and its communities
