We are seeking a confident and creative journalist with excellent editorial judgement to be the next editor of Newsnight, our flagship news programme on BBC Two.

Besides its television output, which includes occasional specials for BBC Two, it has a lively social media presence which complements the broadcast offering. The output includes news making interviews, in-depth investigations and original journalism so the editor needs sound decision-making under pressure. The output also aims to surprise, enlighten and entertain the audience of BBC Two and so the editor also needs wit as well as editorial wisdom.

As the Editor you will understand and develop the show’s distinctive character and identity; maintaining the independence and integrity of the output and ensuring that it meets BBC editorial policy standards and can sustain public, legal, political and media scrutiny.

You will take managerial, editorial and financial responsibility for a team of journalists where you develop and promote a robust but creative editorial environment; encouraging the team to originate and deliver original story ideas/material with editorial ambition.

You will represent the BBC at a senior level.

You will have an excellent track record as journalist with a strong interest in Politics and current affairs, as well as business, culture, science and the other issues on Newsnight’s agenda. Experience of making difficult editorial decisions under pressure and at short notice is essential as well as excellent leadership qualities including good interpersonal and team building skills. You will have demonstrable ability to inspire imaginative and innovative editorial and production creativity.
