About the role:

AB is offering two opportunities to join one of the UK’s leading internal communication agencies as editor. One is a full-time position and the other is a 9-month maternity cover. In either case, you will be editing several employee magazines of different frequencies for a range of clients. This is a busy and varied role within a hard-working and committed editorial team.

You will be an experienced editor with exceptional writing and editing skills and an uncanny eye for detail. You can grasp complicated business ideas and know how to make them simple and engaging. You have a genuine passion for story telling, plus experience of commissioning content for a range of channels and platforms, including video. You will know how to get the best out of reporters, designers and film-makers – and how to work closely with the wider creative team to produce stunning pages on a tight budget.

You know how to implement a content strategy and refine it with colleagues. Some experience of measuring the effectiveness of communication channels would be an advantage.

About you:

You will have at least five years’ editorial experience, ideally editing several titles. You will be able to demonstrate first rate interviewing, reporting, subbing and proofreading skills. It is likely you have worked in internal communications and have a good understanding of its challenges. You should be able to speak with confidence and experience about the value of good internal communication.

You will have a proven background in print journalism as well as a keen interest in helping clients embrace video, mobile applications and social media.

Key tasks and activities:

  • Develop a superb understanding of the client’s business – its strategy, culture and values.

  • Build close working relationships with key client contacts at all levels.

  • Develop a plan of action for how each title can evolve in line with your client’s priorities and expectations.

  • Challenge clients with your ideas and expertise.

  • Interpret client story briefs successfully to your colleagues across design and editorial accordingly.

  • Escalate issues or concerns to the relevant account manager and/or AB’s senior team.

  • Organise and lead editorial meetings with the client.

  • Know the relevant schedules. Ensure projects stay on track. Flag any issues (schedule slippage or copy quality concerns) to the senior team

  • Work with your team to develop and maintain story lists. Generate ideas for content that can be put forward at editorial meeting

  • Manage the process of creating regular as well as one-off communications, including writing story briefs if appropriate, producing flatplans, conducting interviews, writing articles, delegating stories to the deputy editor and reporter(s), working with chief sub-editor.

  • Ensure all stories are signed off by clients.

  • Develop ideas for photography and video. Book photographers and videographers within budget

  • Write page briefs for the AB studio team and put pages into studio on schedule

  • Ensure proofs are sent to client on schedule

  • Liaise with client to ensure sign-off of publication

  • Attend weekly editorial and production meetings

  • Suggest ideas for better working practices within AB and helping implement these as required.


Basic salary: £30,000 - £35,000
Annual bonus, subject to business performance
