The i Paper talent scheme
Apply here to become an i apprentice – earn while you learn journalism.
The i Paper is recruiting two new apprentices to complete a diploma in journalism and gain invaluable experience within a busy national newsroom.
Aimed at school and college leavers who would otherwise face barriers to a career in journalism, the two-year programme beginning in February 2025 offers structured on-the-job training, a nationally recognised journalism qualification via the PA Media Academy, and mentoring from The i Paper’s experienced journalists.
Each successful apprentice will be paid a fixed salary for two years and receive fully funded tuition throughout the scheme.
Oliver Duff, The i Paper’s editor-in-chief, said: “If you think you have what it takes, our apprentice scheme could be your perfect pathway into journalism. We welcome applicants from all walks of life who share a passion for journalism - and who are motivated to succeed.”
Trainees will work towards achieving their Junior Journalism Apprenticeship, made up of the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism, and a final assessment project.
Each apprentice will complete six weeks of intensive training with our partner PA Media Academy, followed by a 13-week programme of PA training from Monday to Thursday, with Fridays spent in The i Paper’s newsroom.
Trainees will then work in The i Paper newsroom for the remainder of the two-year apprenticeship alongside completing their PA exams and final project.
Kia Elise-Green, who became a feature writer of The i Paper after two years as an apprentice, said: “This scheme gave me a way into a career I dreamed of without the financial barrier of university. During two years as an apprentice, I worked on articles close to my heart, got experience on multiple desks in the newsroom and had support in every aspect of my training.
“I found my love for features and now I work every day with the team that taught me all I know.
“I’m so grateful for the newsroom and my tutors for the job I get to do. I don’t think I would be where I am in my career if this scheme didn’t exist.”
You do not need journalism experience to apply.
Please apply via this website with a CV, a cover letter explaining why you would make the most of this opportunity, and finally 300 words on stories or issues that you believe should be better highlighted in the media – and why.
Candidates must have A-levels and/or a BTEC Level 3 as a qualification requirement.
Applications are open now with a deadline of Friday 20 December. The apprenticeship scheme starts in February 2025, with successful applicants being notified of the outcome by 17 January 2025. Candidates should be available for interview in early January.
