Role: Live news reporter – Newport

Publication: The South Wales Argus / Barry & District News / Penarth Times / Free Press Series

Location: Our new city centre offices in Newport

Salary: Up to £23,500 DOE

We seek a reporter to specialise in live / trending news for our Wales websites, including the flagship South Wales Argus.

This fast-paced role will be expected to produce a high story count and high levels of article page views, with a target of one million a month.

You will work shifts covering a mix of breaking news such as traffic and crime, monitoring local celebrity social media accounts and turning trending social media posts into stories.

You will be part of a newsroom behind the daily South Wales Argus and weekly titles the Free Press Series, Penarth Times and Barry & District News and a wider region that also produces the Western Telegraph, Tivyside Advertiser and South Wales Guardian.

About you

If you are motivated by getting lots of people to read your stories, get a buzz out of seeing your name at the top of the page view league table, have top-notch SEO skills, can write great headlines, know how to seed a story on social media and how to spot something that people will want to read – then this is for you.

If you want to be a patch reporter who gets out and about in the community, this is not the role for you. We have already got those people in the team and newsrooms need a mix of different skills.

Ideally, you will have newsroom experience and be NCTJ gold standard qualified – live news sometimes means self-publishing so we need to be confident that you know your stuff legally and ethically and that you’re copy is good and clean.

This role will not suit every personality type and we will include a work trial and test as part of the interview day.

We are an inclusive workplace and welcome applicants from all backgrounds. Candidates from an ethnic minority background with their NCTJ diploma including shorthand will be guaranteed an interview as long as the post is still open when their application arrives.
