Managing Editor, European Power

Location: London, Canary Wharf

The role: Platts is seeking a proactive and dedicated Managing Editor to coordinate and drive its coverage of European power markets. Based in London, the Managing Editor position will be responsible at the regional level for a team of market reporters. This team will be responsible for price and market intelligence gathering activities across a range of disciplines, including the price formation process; and the editing and compilation of a daily newsletter. A key element of the role will be the ability to build on the strong reputation that Platts has established in this area of the business, in a challenging environment.

The position will have excellent managerial and time management skills and advanced experience of market reporting and publishing. The position also has expertise in developing and applying methodologies, and must be able to serve externally as a subject matter expert. The role will also assist the Associate Editorial Director in delivering the vision for Platts Power & Gas and work closely with other connected units, such as Marketing and Commercial. The Managing Editor is expected to work well in conjunction with senior leaders, but also to show strong individual leadership and assume considerable responsibility for the delivery of essential market coverage and pricing.

Accountabilities

  • Drives news, market coverage and price assessment formation processes within the European power team
  • Manages reporting activities related to markets coverage
  • Monitors team’s news/market reporting activities, ensuring timely coverage of events
  • Understands relevance of information to the customer, and facilitates the development of value-added news/information
  • Regularly assists in market coverage, and continues to produce regular in-depth analytical articles
  • Ensures copy and commentary is accurate, aligning with pricing data and assessments
  • Establishes best practices and systems to improve quality and analysis contained in written commentaries and news
  • Manages external engagement activities and serves as subject matter expert
  • Coordinates team source development strategy
  • Develops and maintains productive relationships with a broad base of key industry sources
  • Regularly represents Platts at industry events and functions including public speaking/expert panel engagements
  • Coaches editors on price assessment issues
  • Develops consistent work processes to ensure consistent application of methodology and quality around the assessment publishing process
  • Regularly reviews the work of all direct reports to identify weaknesses as well as best practices within the team
  • Reviews and manages industry feedback on potential methodology changes
  • Researches and interprets market issues
  • Develops proposals around new pricing assessments or changes
  • Serves as an expert trainer on price methodology training both internally and externally
  • Ensures team regularly updates internal documentation and maintains quality around those documents i.e. how-to documentation; source lists and reporting notes and otherwise ensures the team is fully aligned with all appropriate operational standards
  • Works closely with editorial director and BCQ representatives to ensure best practice and adherence to editorial standards
  • Develops managerial talent within the team
  • Initiates staff training and development efforts
  • In charge of hiring process for department

Qualifications

  • BA degree in journalism or business preferred with approximately four years’ experience of reporting/writing/analytical or editorial management experience
  • Strong editing/proof-reading skills
  • Strong communication skills that implement good listening, clear writing style; and strong verbal skills. The ability to communicate across a wide range of groups and personalities internally and externally
  • Strong leadership ability which utilizes influence, and promotes team collaboration and development, as well as personal accountability
  • Displays strong numeracy including a solid understanding of economics principles and of risk management principles
  • Strong at identifying improvements and efficiencies and implementing processes that continually promote productivity and quality improvements
  • Strong critical thinking skills and expert at problem/conflict resolution
