News is at the core of The Verge, and we are looking for a talented news writer to join our UK team and make sure we are always one of the first to the biggest news stories of the day.

As news writer, you will join a team of reporters and editors who race to publish the sharpest angles and best analysis on the essential tech news of the day.

Our news team stands on the front line of The Verge's editorial operation, keeping our savvy audience informed and delighted.

Who we are

The Verge is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about what is now, what is next, and what is possible.

As a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organisation and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.

What you will do

News writers will work with the international news team to hit the biggest news of the day before people in the US are even awake. You will spend your days finding, vetting, and writing news.

Daily responsibilities include:

  • Gathering stories from news feeds and spotting breaking news
  • Writing news
  • Assisting team with honing story angles and providing additional reporting

Who you are

Candidates should have a fierce passion for consumer technology news; you should feel a constant need to know what is happening in the world of platforms and gadgets, and a desire to deliver the best story before anyone else. We are looking for someone who is already closely monitoring tech news to vet stories, deliver sharp headlines and angles, and who can switch gears at a moment's notice to put breaking news on the site.

Qualifications:

  • Some experience writing tech news stories
  • Solid background with all things Microsoft, PC gaming, related accessories
  • Savvy user of services like Discord and Twitch
  • Can work in London office two to three days a week, as required
  • The ability to transform complex ideas into interesting and understandable stories, with an eye toward the audience's interests and needs
  • An ability to connect the dots - taking a technology or culture story from something abstract to something tangible
  • Has a love for breaking news
  • Passionate about The Verge's core coverage areas of technology and science

Bonus:

  • You have built a PC and are comfortable getting into the guts of gadgets

Please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team, even if you do not meet every qualification listed! We have hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.
