Al-Fanar Media, a publication focused on higher education in the Arab world, is seeking a part-time copy editor to work on the English side of the website. Along with help to make sure articles are organised and structured well, we are in particular need of someone to police our copy and improve writing, fix grammar, check facts, and write catchy, newsy headlines. We are a small team and need assistance in adhering to our own style and developing a sensible stylebook, which is based on New York Times style. The person would also do “site checks” on stories edited by others and fix captions, look for typos, and occasionally sound the alarm when spotting matters of balance or accuracy. We work in American English. We deal with a wide range of writers, from those who are struggling in a language that is not their first, to highly experienced journalists. While this is a part-time job, we need it to be a high priority in your professional life, and we expect to propose a monthly retainer.
We’re looking for three years editing experience, minimum, and strong references. Interest in education and the Middle East are pluses. Please send a C.V. and cover letter to email@example.com.
