Patch reporter – Newport

Publication: The South Wales Argus / Barry & District News / Penarth Times / Free Press Series

Location: Newport

Salary: £22,500

The South Wales Argus is looking for a new reporter to join our busy newsroom at the heart of Newport.  You will be part of a newsroom that produces the daily South Wales Argus and weekly titles the Free Press Series, Penarth Times and Barry & District News but your core patch will be Newport East and Severnside, which includes Chepstow and surrounding towns.

It’s an exciting and varied job. You could be doing a Facebook Live report from the city centre for a new bar opening, covering breaking news from across South Wales, reporting on a court case, and writing a heart-warming community story, all on the same shift.

The role will involve weekend work and early and late shifts on a rota basis, once you’ve established yourself in the team.

Our reporters are expected to meet audience goals, which means learning how to find a good story, tell it across different platforms, and get it in front of more people through social media and SEO. It also means balancing your workload with quick wins and more in-depth stories, producing an average of five stories each day.

About you

This role is suited to a trainee who has completed their NCTJ diploma to gold standard, including their 100 words per minute shorthand (ideally needed so you can cover court safely) and is ready to make an immediate impact reporting on a city with big ambitions and bags of potential. You should have a driving licence and access to a car because the patch includes some rural areas that are difficult to access quickly by public transport.

As a patch reporter, you will be curious about everything that goes on in the community you are covering and want to be the first to tell people what is happening. You will build good contacts and like getting out and talking to people. This is not the role of someone who likes to stay at their desk.

You will get on-the-job support, training and coaching to become a first-class reporter.

We are an inclusive workplace and welcome applicants from all backgrounds. Candidates from an ethnic minority background who have their NCTJ diploma including shorthand will be guaranteed an interview so long as the post is still open when their application arrives.
