About the opportunity...

HuffPost UK seeks a story-getter: a journalist with a proven track record of breaking exclusives with national impact and a passion for getting beyond the media narrative to the truth of a situation.

The heart of HuffPost UK journalism is in its political reporting and its brilliant political team, working from the Westminster lobby. We want to complement that team by appointing an established journalist to lead our coverage of politics outside of Westminster. You will focus on how political decision-making is impacting on people’s lives, how people are organising outside of traditional politics and how people feel about politics.

We want to tell the stories of people who are often overlooked by media outlets. Brexit and the victory of Donald Trump have made it clear that journalists need to work harder to connect with audiences who feel left behind, and this post will lead our coverage in that respect.

You will have proven experience in breaking stories and exclusives and have a record of bringing stories to life with flair, intelligence, and imagination. You’ll be able to articulate the bigger picture, yet capable of tackling the detail. You will be passionate about what the real story of the UK is and have a strong sense of the stories you want to pursue.

You will have an intimate understanding of policy, the pinch points and the pitfalls that will steer you to the heart of the story when the government is letting people down and a contacts book full of the people you need to stand that story up.

You will have experience traveling around the country and building networks of contacts that will bring the story to you time and again. You will have a command of social media which means you are constantly listening to the national conversation and tuned into the new developments.

You will know how to take a tip and stand it up and you will be skilled at finding and interviewing the people with the experience at the sharp end of that policy to tell the real story of its impact. Your journalism will make our readers feel like we understand their lives and we’re on their side.

About you...

  • Ideally 8+ years' experience as a reporter
  • A cuttings book overflowing with exclusives
  • Excellent writing skills
  • A hunger for news and ability to drill down into detail and data
  • A passion for HuffPost journalism
