In a release sent out by Trinity Mirror this afternoon, it was announced that the changes could result in up to 10 redundancies, although the newspaper says it "hoped the final number would be lower than that".

The new structure will see teams of reporters covering specific geographic areas, working on content across all of MEN Media's titles and platforms.

A single management structure will also be formed to lead the newsroom, with "a strengthened emphasis on content creation".

The release also announces that production will be handled by a single team, and remaining reporters will undergo multimedia training.

MEN Media editor-in-chief Maria McGeoghan says in a release that the changes aim to better serve audiences by creating "one great team".

"The reorganisation of our newsroom is aimed at reinforcing the high standards of journalism across all of our products, to serve our audiences better and to create one great team,” she says. "I want to put original, local content at the heart of everything we do. We need to work smarter to gather first-class material, publish creatively, ensure consistently high standards, avoid duplication of effort and spread the workload more effectively.

"I am proud of our editorial team, who I believe represent the best of journalism in our region. This process is about using their skills in a better way, to make the business a success and to secure its long-term future."

Today's news follows the announcement in March that the Guardian Media Group were to cut 29 jobs at Channel M, a TV station that operated out of the MEN newsroom.

A number of new roles will also reportedly be created within the MEN restructure, two of which are reported to be focused on user-generated content.
