The Postcode Lottery has partnered with Mill Media to invest £100,000 in independent local journalism, providing 1,150 free annual subscriptions — each usually worth £89 — for young people aged 16–25 across six major UK cities.
The initiative aims to remove the cost barrier to trusted local news and help build news-reading habits in a generation that’s more likely to get information from social media than paywalled sites.
The funding will give young people in Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool, London, Birmingham, and Glasgow access to Mill Media’s network of high-quality local publications. At a time when just 10 per cent of UK adults currently pay for online news, the move hopes to encourage lifelong engagement with in-depth, community-focused journalism.
Subscriptions, offered on a first-come, first-served basis, can be claimed from 29 September.
Mill Media has more than 200,000 free readers and 15,000 paying members across its six titles. Its founding title Manchester Mill has around 4,700 paying members, aiming to reach 5,000 in the next fortnight.
