I was flicking through my Facebook a few weeks ago and there was a fascinating article that caught my attention: Would you choose £50,000 over the chance of £1m?

It took me mere moments to pick the guaranteed cash over a coin flip for 20 times the amount. And it turns out three quarters of the British public agree with my position.

"It's a great little talking point, isn't it?" says the author Kevin Peachey, the BBC's first cost of living correspondent. "And a really fun one to vox pop around."

Formerly a personal finance correspondent, this role is distinct in getting friends and family to open up about the everyday realities of the cost of living crisis brought about by the pandemic in 2021. But also wise up a little bit in the process and being more informed about money management.

"The idea of having some money is an exciting one, but also the element of safety in their finances was sort of really came through," he continues.
