Three freelance journalists and their driver have been kidnapped in Somalia, according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

Canadian journalist Amanda Lindhout, Australian photographer Nigel Brennan, Somali photographer Abdifatah Mohammed Elmi and their driver Mahad, were ambushed by gunmen near Mogadishu on August 23.

RSF reported that the two foreign journalists, who had been in the country since August 20, were on their way to visit a refugee camp at Afgoye, approximately 20km west of Mogadishu, when the kidnap occurred.

Motivations for the ambush are unclear and no ransom demand or claim for responsibility have yet been issued, said RSF.

A blog and two Facebook support groups to campaign for the release of Lindhout, a freelancer for France 24 who previously worked in Baghdad, have been set up.
