Nottingham Trent University took away two accolades at the National Council for the Training of Journalists' (NCTJ) accredited course performance awards last night.

The university was top of the postgraduate results table for its MA in newspaper journalism, with 63 per cent of students achieving the industry standard. Its undergraduate newspaper course also came in first place with 53 per cent of students making the grade.

The top six performing NCTJ accredited courses for the academic year 2009/10 were presented with the awards at the Journalism Skills Conference in Cardiff yesterday. Newspaper journalism courses at five different centres, including Nottingham Trent, received the prizes for the highest percentage of students achieving C grade passes or better in all the NCTJ core exams, as well as 100 wpm shorthand.

In the awards programme News Associates in London had the best performing commercial fast-track course, with 71 per cent of students achieving the gold standard qualification, making it the best performing course overall.

Other winners included: Darlington College, which came top of the accredited fast-track courses at further education colleges; Sheffield College; Norton College, which was named the best performing accredited academic year further education course; and Harlow College, which had the top performing NCTJ magazine course out of six accredited by the industry body.

Detailed exam results for all 68 NCTJ accredited courses will be published on the NCTJ website later this month, according to the industry body.

"All our accredited course providers should be congratulated on achieving the high standards the industry looks for," NCTJ chief executive Joanne Butcher said before presenting the awards.

"It is no mean feat to achieve accreditation and to make the public commitment to providing all the NCTJ requires. We know how demanding and exacting that standard is and the public scrutiny it involves."

Update: Due to a press release error the article previously read that the Press Association Training’s London-based newspaper journalism foundation course was the winner of the best performing commercial fast-track course, when in fact it was News Associates in London. This has now been corrected.
