newsrewired
Some of the most enterprising and technologically-savvy journalists in the digital news industry will inspire participants at Journalism.co.uk's one-day news:rewired event, launched to mark the site's 10th anniversary.

Wearied by navel-gazing, expensive journalism conferences which often fail to provide practical advice, the Journalism.co.uk team decided to design an event to tackle the reality of the daily newsroom head-on.

Journalists from both small and large news organisations will come together to share their experiences and ideas for multimedia journalism, collaboration and entrepreneurship.

Anyone with an interest in digital news production is invited to attend news:rewired at City University, London on 14 January 2010, 10:00 - 17:15. Follow us on Twitter for the latest updates: @newsrewired.

Highlights include:
  • Keynote speech from George Brock, the new head of City University's school of journalism
  • Videojournalism tips from Southbank artist-in-residence and VJ pioneer, David Dunkley Gyimah
  • Data-mashing expertise from MySociety's senior developer, Francis Irving
  • Citizen collaboration experiences from Sky News' Ruth Barnett, the UK's first Twitter correspondent
  • News advice from the Guardian Local launch editor, Sarah Hartley
Other speakers come from both public and commercial journalism backgrounds: organisations including the BBC, the News Statesman, the Guardian, the Telegraph and Times Online. From new regional sites (the Lichfield Blog/SoGlos) to new online enterprises (AudioBoo/Demotix), Journalism.co.uk has got the digital ground covered.

news:rewired is Journalism.co.uk's first major conference event and is designed to herald a series of similar events under the news:rewired banner, in partnership with some other major media brands, said Journalism.co.uk's founder, John Thompson.

"It's always been our goal to educate as well as observe at Journalism.co.uk, and news:rewired represents the culmination of our accumulated efforts in that direction over the past decade," added Thompson.

"news:rewired will be a chance for working journalists, publishers and other media folk to get their wires uncrossed about new media and learn to take strategic and commercial advantage of the many tools available. Practical learning will be the order of the day, with plenty of chance to network with other delegates both in person and via various online backchannels.

"Online, there's always a shortcut to achieving your aims, and the news:rewired logo is designed to demonstrate how resistance can be overcome by short circuiting," he said.

"Resistance is futile - the future is digital!"
