The Mail on Sunday was the only national newspaper to see an increase in circulation last month, with a 1 per cent increase to 1.9 million copies.
Reports suggest the newspaper's publisher, Daily Mail & General Trust is planning to launch a new Sunday tabloid in the wake of the closure of the News of the World , the highest selling Sunday title before its closure last week.
The Audit Bureau of Circulation figures published today for last month indicate that DMGT could be well-placed to capitalise on the News of the World's former 2.67 million-strong audience.
The paper will increase its print run to 3 million this weekend to cater for possible additional readers.
Other Sunday titles are also increasing their print runs, including Trinity Mirror titles the Sunday Mirror and the People, which will now distribute more than 3 million between them, and the Daily Star, which is reportedly upping the number of copies from 600,000 to around 2 million.
Marcus Rich, managing director of the Mail On Sunday , said the title was "delighted with another strong showing" and credited the rise to the launch of the Mail Rewards Club last month.
The News of the World saw a 5.7 per cent decline in its final month, roughly in line with other Sunday mid-market and tabloid titles.
Among the quality titles the Independent on Sunday experienced a relatively modest decline of 3.7 per cent, compared with 6.8 per cent for the Telegraph, 7.8 per cent for the Times, and 11.6 per cent for the Observer.
