Former News of the World editor Andy Coulson has been granted permission to appeal a high court ruling that News Group Newspapers did not have to pay any legal costs he may accrue in relation to any potential criminal proceedings.

Coulson's legal representative had submitted to the High Court last year that NGN should pay any potential legal costs incurred by him "in all types of proceedings, including criminal proceedings, concerning his conduct as editor of News of the World", but his claim was refused.

Today the Court of Appeal granted permission for the appeal, after Coulson submitted a renewal application for permission.

No date has yet been set but a substantive hearing will be listed in time.

Coulson was arrested and bailed last year in connection with allegations of corruption and phone hacking. He has consistently denied any knowledge of wrongdoing during his time as editor of the now-closed title.
