What is it? MeVee is a social media livestreaming platform that allows users to broadcast, view and share live streams from their mobile device.

Cost? Free

Devices: iOS

How it is of use to journalists? The app, launched on the App Store on 3 January, joins the growing market of livestreaming apps, which includes the likes of Periscope, Meerkat and Facebook Mentions – all of which have been useful in news situations, such as the refugee crisis and the Paris attacks.

However, unlike its competitors, journalists using MeVee are able to share the link to their live broadcasts whilst streaming, to Twitter, Facebook, by email and even via Skype, as opposed to tweeting out prior to livestreaming and then relying on the community to promote their content for them.

Streams are also automatically recorded, so they are at the users' disposal should they need them at a later date. And with MeVee's option to embed streams into blog posts or websites, this feature will be useful for reporters who wish to publish their videos alongside longer written features or reports.

MeVee also allows users to create 'Groups' of select people you wish to broadcast to – handy for streaming conferences, private meetings or arranging interviews.

Similarly to other livestreaming apps, users can follow other accounts and gain popularity through positive audience interaction or the number of likes their videos receive. Comments are restricted to a maximum of 25 characters at the moment, but more are promised soon.

When searching for content, the 'Discover' tab will show the trending videos, or you can choose a broadcast from a category such as news, music or sports.

Creators are promising that a future version of the app will allow users to invite on-screen guests, which may be useful for streaming two-way interviews.
