Four journalists from France, Germany, Finland and Italy were presented with the European Parliament's annual prize for excellence in journalism today, each taking away €5,000 in prize money.

The prize is given in four categories: written press, internet, television and radio.

Romain Gubert of French weekly Le Point was the overall winner within the written press category, blogger Massimiliano Nespola from Italy took away the internet prize, the television award went to Tero Koskinen of Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE and Steffen Wurzel of Germany was the winner in the radio category.

The prize, now in its fourth year, received a record of 355 entries from across the EU this year; 158 in print, 73 for the web, 64 for television and 60 for radio.

Presenting the awards today in Brussels president Jerzy Buzek said: "I know how difficult a task it can be to explain Europe, its policies and its decisions.

"Promoting a better understanding of the EU is sometimes hard and complicated. But it is vital."

National juries had already selected 64 national winners (21 in the written press category, 16 for radio, 15 in the television category and 12 for internet), before an award jury chose overall winners across the EU for each category.

The UK had two national winners who went forward to compete for the overall prize, including Chris Bowlby, for a piece broadcast on BBC Radio 4, and Ewan Pate for an article published in Scottish paper The Courier.
