The finalists for the first online journalism awards organised by the Online News Association were announced this month.

Heavily funded mainstream news sites dominated most of the categories with ABCNews.com, WSJ.com, TheStreet.com, FT.com all featuring in the lists.

The five finalists for the category "general excellence in on-line journalism" were: Central Europe Review; CNET News.com; Insure.com; Salon.com, and; TheStreet.com.

Some of the most interesting finalists appear in two categories established to recognise the best investigative reports. MSNBC.com makes it for an investigation into humanity’s struggle to survive and the impact this is having on the planet.
Associated Press also features as a finalist for a withering investigation into an alleged massacre by American soldiers at the start of the Korean War. The coverage features haunting pictures of the site where viewers can choose picture angles. It also features interviews with war veterans.

Another category is designed to recognise journalism that helps users improve the quality of their lives. Finalists here include BabyCenter.com for a package on baby health and APBNews.com or a package on crime risk on college campuses.

The winners will be announced at a luncheon during the first national conference of the Online News Association on 1 December 2000. The awards were organised in collaboration with Columbia University.
