The Mail Online was the only UK news website to see a rise in traffic in June, with a 2.24 per cent month-on-month rise taking the total number of visitors to nearly 94 million last month.

Figures audited by the Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC) show that the Independent and Standard websites, both owned by the Lebedev consortium, suffered the greatest declines month-on-month, with the Independent suffering a 17.2 per cent fall to less than 13 million, and the Evening Standard seeing a 12.57 per cent drop to just under 3 million.

That followed an increase in unique users of 33 per cent for the Standard in May after a previous dip. A release issued last month said May's increase represented "continued investment in the digital development of the brand".

The Independent was the only audited title with figures available showing a year-on-year decline for its website, of 5.33 per cent.

The greatest annual increase was for the Mail Online, with visitor numbers up 39.68 per cent compared with June 2011.

The Telegraph website saw an 8.7 per cent fall in June to around 45.6 million monthly users, Metro's online traffic dropped by 4.34 per cent to just more than 8 million, Mirror Group Digital saw browsers fall by 2.24 per cent to around 15.5 million and the Sun, which this week saw a site refresh, dropped by 1.53 per cent to just below 25 million.

Month-on-month figures are not available for the Guardian.co.uk but the figures show that it saw an average daily decline in June of 0.88 per cent. The website saw a 29.14 per cent increase in average daily traffic year-on-year.
