IPC Media has launched an off-portal NME Mobile site to which users gain access by texting a short form number.

Available to WAP-enabled phones, NME is amongst the first major brands to develop a mobile platform away from the portal sites offered by the service providers.

IPC partnered with Saffron Digital to develop a site - carrying news, blogs, images and music downloads - away from the portal based services that dominate mobile content platforms.

Emap is expected to follow suit and soon launch an off-portal video service. Last month it relaunched its on-portal FHM mobile service to focus heavily on user-generated video.

Users of the new NME platform can access the site by texting the word NME to 63456, a link is then sent to the user in the reply message giving them access to over a million music tracks.

"With the iPod generation, mobile is a key platform through which consumers interact with both music and the music world. Now, with NME Mobile, music fans will be able to get music, news and more on their handset. NME Mobile is the best mobile music service on the go," said Miles Ross, IPC Media head of mobile, in a press statement.
