The Independent received a higher proportion of its UK readers on mobile than any other UK newspaper in September, according to new figures from the National Readership Survey (NRS) released today.

The 4.7 million who visited Independent.co.uk on mobile in September represent 45 per cent of the 10.4 million net total for the publication that month, a total which includes print and online and is adjusted to remove duplicates.

The Independent's mobile readership as percentage of the total is only 1 percent higher than the Guardian's, at 44.34 per cent, itself only a fraction higher than The Telegraph, which has a mobile readership comprising 44.18 per cent of its total.

The Daily Mirror saw the most mobile-only readers, with just over 5 million people reading stories from Mirror.co.uk on a mobile device, but not reading the newspaper or visiting the site on a personal computer.

In terms of mobile-only readers, the Daily Mail came second with 4.7 million, and The Telegraph came third, with a little under 4.5 million.

In keeping with figures from the Audit Bureau of Circulation, the Daily Mail boasts the biggest digital UK audience, with a net total of 17.3 million UK readers visiting the outlet's website.

This is the second time the NRS has included data regarding mobile audiences in their quarterly PADD report. In the last figures, for June 2014, the Daily Mail received the highest number of mobile-only readers and the highest proportion of its audience was made up of mobile readers.

Figures are calculated by combining NRS data for the year October 2013 to September 2014 with figures from comScore for September 2014.

The full report can be found on the NRS website.
