Want to get on in journalism? "Pick a specialism and stick to it. Read as much as you can about your specialist area and blog about it every day with out fail," advises Jemima Kiss, the newly appointed new media reporter at the Guardian Unlimited.

Ms Kiss, formerly news editor at Journalism.co.uk, has most recently been working on a freelance basis for titles such as PaidContent.org and Moconews covering digital media online and mobile. Her new role will see her covering online and mobile development for the MediaGuardian.

Ms Kiss's studies in visual performance at Dartington College of Arts in Devon provided her with the core skills of observation and expression needed for journalism before learning 'the old-fashioned way' by training on the job and attending a few specialist training courses.

"[There is] absolutely no excuse for not having a damn good blog if you want to promote your writing skills, your commitment and, most importantly, your interest in engaging and debating with your peers," advises Ms Kiss to fellow reporters.

"Whatever you put your name to, and whenever you give people your name, you have an opportunity to build credibility and trust with the people you interview and the people that read your work. Hopefully those people will remember you and stick with you if they know you have integrity as a journalist."
