The Telegraph has launched a metered pay model for users outside the UK, which offers 20 articles for free each month before they must pay a subscription.

According to a release, the Telegraph is building on its "strong international presence" by launching two digital subscription packages for international audiences, adding that two-thirds of its website's unique visitors are from outside the UK.

From today international users will be able to access 20 articles a month before subscriptions will apply, either £1.99 a month for its web and mobile pack which includes access to the Telegraph website and its mobile apps, or £9.99 for its "full digital pack" which also includes access to both the daily and Sunday iPad editions.

The release adds that "with both packages, readers will be offered a one-month free trial before they are asked to commit to a subscription".

"As a global brand, the Telegraph now plans to develop a closer relationship with its readers around the world.

"From 1 November, the Telegraph is extending its subscriber offer to its international website readers by adopting a metering approach similar to the model currently used by the New York Times.

The Telegraph adds that the media group "continually evaluates the developments in the digital sector", but states "there are currently no plans to introduce a meter model for UK readers".

In September Journalism.co.uk reported that the Independent's experiment with a metered paywall for readers in the US and Canada had "not delivered on the ambitions from a revenue standpoint".

As a result almost a year on from its launch of the trial, the Independent said it was reviewing the model "with the most likely outcome of removing it".

The Independent's metered model also allows readers to access 20 articles before subscription.
