Hill, who has been acting editor of the paper since January, will take up his new role from March 1, after 18 months as head of multimedia for Trinity Mirror Regionals.
As editor, Hill will oversee the title's move to a single multimedia newsroom as part of Trinity-owned publisher Media Wales' plans to integrate the news operations of the South Wales Echo and Western Mail .
"Mike's experience in print, coupled with the wealth of knowledge he has gained while leading our multimedia development, makes him an ideal choice to lead the Echo," said Neil Benson, editorial director for Trinity Mirror Regionals.
