YouTube elections hub

YouTube today announced the launch of its 'US elections hub', for which it has announced six news outlets as partners, including the Wall Street Journal, New York Times and Al Jazeera.

In a blog post YouTube's news manager Olivia Ma said the hub will be "a one-stop channel for key political moments from now through the upcoming US election day on 6 November".

"You can watch all of the live speeches from the floor of the upcoming Republican and Democratic National Conventions, see Google+ Hangouts with power brokers behind the scenes, and watch a livestream of the official presidential and vice presidential debates."

The feed of video content will include live and on-demand content from news outlets including ABC News, Al Jazeera English, BuzzFeed, Larry King, the New York Times, Phil DeFranco, Univision and the Wall Street Journal.

"Each will put their own stamp on the presidential race - from the conventions to the debates to election night," Ma adds.

Head of video for the New York Times Ann Derry told Journalism.co.uk the hub will help raise awareness of the news outlet's content to those who either do not visit the New York Times website, or are not regular visitors. It is "another venue to air our journalism", she said.

In the case of the New York Times, as well as the live content which will be streamed on its website and via the YouTube elections hub, it will also collect together other political video content to share with the YouTube audience.

A number of publishers this week announced their plans for coverage of the US elections, such as the Associated Press whose plans are outlined in a release.

Meanwhile Tumblr announced that six bloggers will be offering "exclusive coverage of the sights, sounds, personalities, protests, politics, and parties in Tampa and Charlotte" during the political conventions via its own election Tumblr.
