Newsquest has recorded its largest ever audience for its network of local newspaper websites, figures released by the Audit Bureau of Circulations Electronic (ABCe) have suggested.

In April this year the publisher's 164 local and regional newspaper websites attracted 5,111,997 unique users – an increase of 618,592 (13.7 per cent) from its last release of monthly figures in May 2007.

According to a press release from the publisher, the figure is the highest audited number ever published by a regional newspaper group.

The network, which includes The Argus in Brighton and The Press in York, also recorded 53,749,107 million page impressions, the ABCe figures said, a rise of 4,667,818 (8.7 per cent) since May last year.

"It’s more than just growing numbers: we have broadened our reach to more local audiences by attracting a younger, more affluent crowd from higher-income households than are typical for newspaper readers," said Roger Green, managing director of Newsquest Digital Media.

Developments across the publisher's local and regional titles in print, online and mobile are planned for this summer, he added.
