NYTimes.com has added to its portfolio of niche blogs with the launch Dot Earth , a blog dedicated to examining the growing human impact on the planet's health.

Dot Earth will explore relevant scientific, social, political and economic issues. New York Times science reporter Andrew C Revkin will be the main contributor.

Mr Revkin was the recipient of a 2006 fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, which will fund part of his travel for the blog.

"Given the critical nature of global environmental issues, Dot Earth is one of our most important projects," said Laura Chang, science editor, New York Times.

"We believe it will create a truly international forum for the exchange of ideas about problems and potential solutions. Andy is exactly the right reporter to take this on."
