Nearly two thirds of news organisations are formally committed to hybrid newsrooms, according to new research from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism (RISJ).

It is no surprise. Physical newsrooms have long been the status quo, meaning expensive and exhausting commutes to work. Then covid came along and forced us into lockdowns and the perks of working from home. Over time, we began to miss the collegiate atmosphere of the newsroom and grew isolated inside our four walls.

Inevitably, news organisations have realised that neither fully in-person nor fully remote work is ideal: the middle ground of hybrid work could be the perfect compromise.

However, as we move forward, hybrid work is likely to become less of a perk and more of an expectation. That should come as alarm bells for the remaining 20 per cent of organisations who are looking to return to old ways or the 17 per cent who have not yet figured out how to manage the hybrid situation.

In this week's podcast, we speak to RISJ head of leadership and author of the physical newsrooms 2022 report, Federica Cherubini, about the five main trends facing hybrid newsrooms and how to prepare for this fundamental shift in the workplace.
