The LGBTQ+ community - also known as the LGBT or LGBTQIA community, depending on how inclusive you want to be and where in the world you live - is made up of people who often have a shared experience of discrimination, prejudice or abuse, and in some parts of the world, criminalisation and persecution because of who they are.
Now that is not to say that all sexual orientations, identities and preferences are all the same. Far from it, it is just that most - but not all - people who identify as LGBTQ+ think there is strength in solidarity and numbers.
In this week's podcast, we speak to Enrique Anarte Lazo, multimedia correspondent at Context, part of the Thomson Reuters Foundation, who identifies with this community and has long reported on LGBTQ+ rights. He helps us explore what this broad range of people needs from news providers.
The LGBTQ+ community largely wants to feel a sense of belonging and validation. While there are nuanced distinctions, there is a shared need and intrigue in hearing about the different - but relatable - struggles and breakthroughs.
