Reporters Without Borders has released its annual World Press Freedom Index, which paints a worldwide picture of the conditions for journalism in 180 countries.

This year, the UK has jumped up three places, making it the 20th in the world for press freedom. In this week's podcast, we speak to Fiona O’Brien, UK director of Reporters Without Borders, about what has changed in the last 12 years.

We will unpick the key trends and moments: increased action on anti-SLAPP legislation, the release of Julian Assange, the stabbing of an Iranian journalist exiled in the UK, and attacks on journalists reporting on the riots that broke out following the Southport tragedy last summer.

Much like in the rest of the world, job cuts and threats to business models are also undermining UK journalists' ability to hold power to account.

The good news is that this is not all happening in a vacuum and your newsroom has a voice. Tune in to find out how to use it.
