Imagine if you were to have an accident in a rental car? Do you know what costs would and wouldn’t be covered by the insurance supplied with the vehicle? Do you know the rules in the country you are travelling in regarding what to do after an accident?
Each time you hire a car circumstances and rules surrounding accidents varies. This is dependent on many conditions including the country you are in, the supplier you hired the car from and your inclusive and any excess insurance policies.
According to a recent survey from the Post Office* 63% of holidaymakers fail to purchase Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) when hiring a car abroad. Failing to do so, regardless of the country you are in, would mean you would have to pay the excess on the policy should you have an accident and this cost can stretch into the thousands.
CDW also covers parts of the car excluded in some of the basic supplier policies including the windscreen and tyres. Certain basic policies may not cover the other car should an accident be your fault so again get an excess policy prior to travelling that covers both parties.
These excess policies can often be bought directly from the supplier when picking up a rental vehicle but this will be quite expensive. Good deals can be found online from third party suppliers at a much lower rate while still offering comprehensive insurance. Lastly, have to hand any emergency or out of hours number for your insurance.
Although it is not a legal requirement in all countries to phone the emergency services following a minor accident, it is highly recommended you do so if in a foreign country. Even where there is minimal damage to a vehicle it will be useful to have a police report for insurance purposes, particularly if it is a hire vehicle. This also applies if you witness an accident.
