Alastair Greener is a seasoned presenter, keynote speaker and host of the Generationally Speaking podcast, where he explores how different generations communicate, collaborate and live alongside each other.

Before launching his communication consultancy, Present Yourself Ltd, Alastair spent 16 years in the cruise industry, managing entertainment on world-renowned ships including the QE2 and Queen Mary 2.

Today, he delivers talks across the UK and internationally on generational understanding, and is a sought-after MC for business and charity events thanks to his warm, polished presence and ability to connect with audiences of all ages.

It was his time at sea that first sparked his fascination with intergenerational dynamics.

“I’d see families coming on board with everyone from toddlers to great-grandparents,” he says. “They weren’t just coexisting. They were connecting.”

Alastair is sharing five reasons why he believes cruising is one of the most effective and underrated ways to bring generations together.

1. There’s something for everyone

“One of the biggest misconceptions about cruising is that it only suits a certain age group. That couldn’t be further from the truth,” says Alastair. “Modern cruise ships are like floating resorts. There are kids’ clubs, teen zones, quiet lounges, fitness classes, lectures and spas. Every generation gets to do something they enjoy, without having to compromise.

“And don’t get me started on the food. Whether you're into sushi or steak, there’s something for everyone. It’s a family gathering without the stress of cooking.”

2. Together time happens naturally

“One of the nicest things about cruising is that shared moments just happen,” Alastair explains. “You don’t have to overthink or plan everything. You might all go off and do your own thing during the day, but then naturally come back together over dinner, a show, or drinks on deck.

"It’s this rhythm that makes a cruise ideal for families who want to reconnect without spending every moment together."

3. Safe, simple and stress-free

“For families travelling with very young children or older relatives, safety and simplicity matter,” Alastair says. “Cruises are built with those needs in mind. You’ve got highly trained staff, medical teams on board, and a huge focus on hospitality. It’s designed to be as easy and enjoyable as possible.

“There’s also a huge benefit in not having to constantly organise things. No taxis to book, no restaurants to find. Everything is right there.”

4. Good value with inclusive options

“A cruise can seem expensive at first glance, but when you factor in that it often includes accommodation, meals, entertainment and even drinks, it becomes a very smart choice, especially for multigenerational groups.

“Families can plan ahead, stick to a budget, and enjoy a bit of luxury without worrying about surprise extras.”

5. Shared experiences that stick

“I’ve seen it time and time again - families doing things together that they’ll talk about for years,” says Alastair. “Whether it’s a beach barbecue, a West End-style show, or trying something new on an excursion, these shared moments leave a real impression.

“The beauty is, everyone gets something different out of it, but they experience it together. That’s the sweet spot when it comes to generational connection.'

Cruising caters to different generations, and brings them closer. For Alastair, that connection was the starting point for his lifelong interest in how age, experience and communication intersect.
