On 23rd June 2016 in a historical referendum decision, British voters decided to leave the European Union (EU). Economists are still split as to what the ramifications of this decision will be in the medium-long term. There are many optimistic predictions and as many economists who are sceptical and pessimistic about the future. We spoke to one UK business about their thoughts and how they feel Brexit has impacted them and their customers so far and also what the future might hold.
Kitchen Warehouse is a Ripon based manufacturer of kitchen units, replacement kitchen doors and all you could want for installing a high-quality but cheaper kitchen. They are defying the Brexit sceptics and passionately believe that the decision to leave the EU is positively impacting their business. We spoke to Daniel Beadle, Company Director of Kitchen Warehouse about Brexit, reasons for optimism and savvy buying by UK residents.
We asked Daniel about reports that some kitchen and bathrooms retailers are citing Brexit as a major reason for concern, with the lack of clarity it is bringing causing deferred purchases. Daniel said, “We are in a different market space as we are wholesalers (as well as retailers), rather than just high street retailers. Customers save money with us because we manufacture our own kitchen units, our customers avoid the middle-man mark-up they pay if they visit typical kitchen showrooms. We understand concerns about Brexit, but money is definitely still in the economy, it’s just that buyers more than ever want “value for money”.
Home improvement retailers like Dunelm have issued profit warnings during 2018, citing a 5% drop in footfall and challenging trading conditions. When asked how Kitchen Warehouse were coping in these most turbulent of trading conditions, Daniel stated, “Our sales have increased 20% year on year, which gives testimony to the fact that businesses can still thrive in this Brexit dominated world. In particular, we have seen a major increase in the sales of replacement kitchen doors in the past twelve months. At the moment it’s a case of providing the quality of goods customers want at highly competitive prices.”
UK house buyers, for example, have lowered their offers and pinned the blame on Brexit. But really this is a smart move to get better deals! The same is true of major purchases around the home such as home improvement items. At times of economic uncertainty the savvy members of the general public are looking to save money. Kitchen Warehouse believes they are well-placed to take advantage of this buyer shrewdness. Daniel said, “It's true that the general public are looking for low-cost deals, but from my experience, they still aren’t prepared to compromise on quality. This works for us well as we sell high-quality kitchens at the lowest prices our customers will be able to find. Customers can buy cheaper kitchens, but this will only be because it's of a lower quality than what we provide. Our ethos is and always will be to sell the very highest quality kitchens at affordable prices - this suits the current mentality of many buyers in this time after our decision to leave the EU.”
We discussed the future, asking Daniel to comment in relation to a Brexit deal or no-deal and all the uncertainty that 2019 onwards seem to have in store. Daniel commented, “As I’ve said we feel Brexit is helping us. We believe buyers have the money, but they only want to spend it when they get value for money, as a family business we are determined to continue providing this value. For us, we don’t fear Brexit, we embrace it!”
