Helen Madzokere hopes to change our view of exercise, at a new fitness centre she’s opening in Canterbury.
Renaissance in Dover Street, which opens this week, has motor-assisted machines which gently take the strain out of exercise while providing enough resistance to tone and strengthen muscle as well burn calories. Qualified fitness instructor Robert Thornton keeps an eye on your progress and advises how to improve personal results.
And new customers who sign up with Helen before Christmas can take part in a fitness challenge, with the chance to win a year’s membership.
Helen, a consultant physiotherapist with almost 30 years’ experience, much of it within the NHS, has taken the plunge to start her own business. She admits to a passion for the preventative, rather than reactive, approach to health care, explaining: “For years, I’ve wanted to help people with mobility or other health issues to feel better. Now I can do so in my own fitness centre.”
Helen found the premises during her regular fitness walk and on her first visit she says “it felt like I belonged”. Since taking on the lease, she’s installed new flooring, and upgraded all the facilities. In addition to the motor-assisted machines, the centre will also have rooms for reflexology, aromatherapy and acupuncture treatments.
The centre will open from 10am to 7pm Monday to Friday and from 10am till 4pm on Sunday. There are various membership options available. Membership will include use of the motor-assisted machines which target different parts of the body, a one-to-one assessment to discuss goals and achievements and a monthly session with a fitness instructor. These sessions help people to include exercise in their daily lives.
Helen advises three visits of between 30 and 40 minutes a week to see results and says the machines will particularly benefit older people and those with mobility difficulties. GP referrals will be welcome.
As an additional service for members, Helen hopes to run a lunch and theatre club and is approaching various organisations in Canterbury for discounts.
