Founded in 2011, Toothpick aimed to establish the dentist-patient relationship on the internet. After a successful trial, it was launched country wide in 2013. It features dentists in London and from all across UK, allowing people who had poor access to dental services book appointments quickly and easily and read reviews of their dentist at the same time, having already helped over 500,000 people access dental care.
Over 100 dentists join the platform weekly. Over 50 per cent of appointments are booked outside of practice opening hours, and nearly 60 per cent of bookings are done via mobile devices.
Toothpick was built in partnership with the largest global provider of health care products to dental practitioners. This enables true real-time booking functionality, with the software reflecting dentists’ own calendar software. Dentist calendars on the site are updated every minute with their live availability, allowing dentists to fill empty appointment slots at short notice, and patients to be confident they’re seeing true availability - aiding a quick booking process.
The company is also backed by some of the UK’s leading angel investors, including Passion Capital, Pradeep Menon, Paul Edwards, Satish Jayakumar and Michael Stephanblome. Practising dentist, Sandeep Senghera, founded the company with a vision to make dentistry more consumer-friendly, while letting dentists market themselves to new customers in a simple, cost-effective way. Their host of investors locked into this vision, and it seems consumers are now doing the same.
