Marten Publishing has acquired Journalism.co.uk and its conference brand Newsrewired, marking a fresh start for the digital publishing platform under new ownership.

Marcela Kunova, who held several positions at Journalism.co.uk over seven years, most recently as editor, led the acquisition last month and has stepped into the role of managing director. The move represents an opportunity to reinvigorate the platform and better serve its community.

"After seven years working at Journalism.co.uk, I could see huge potential for growth and innovation," said Kunova. "I want to take the company into a new era and help foster innovative newsrooms that make an impact all over the world."

Kunova highlighted the urgent need for transformation in the media landscape. "The industry is facing real challenges - traditional business models are struggling, audience attention is harder to capture, and the way content reaches people keeps shifting," she said. "But there's also massive potential for those who embrace new technology early. We can't afford to wait - the speed of change means we need to act decisively now to stay ahead."

The platform, which serves journalists, media consultants, PR and communication professionals, media tech companies, and academics, will undergo a complete transformation this year. Plans include a full rebrand with new name and logos, a redesigned platform built around user needs, and expanded directories to boost connections within the industry.

The existing team will remain in place, with Jacob Granger taking on the role of community editor and Ophelia Birch becoming training and growth manager. Kunova praised the team's expertise and commitment to the community.

"I'm so proud of our small team," she said. "They're full of brilliant ideas and truly understand what our audience needs. Now they have the space and support to really blossom and bring those ideas to life."

The new ownership plans to embrace AI-powered tools and modern approaches to grow the platform and better serve its audience. A new awards programme spotlighting digital innovation in newsrooms will launch by autumn, alongside the redesigned platform expected by the end of the year.

The brand relaunch is set for this summer, with plans to expand the team by hiring a content creator once the initial changes are in place.

Journalism.co.uk has been a resource for digital publishing professionals for more than 25 years. Under Marten Publishing, the platform aims to refocus on fostering connections and supporting innovation in digital journalism.
