According to a survey conducted by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), women’s entrepreneurship rates have increased by 13 percent on average. Lead author and Professor of Entrepreneurship at Babson College, Donna Kelley prepared the report with Baruch College, which found that while the rates of female entrepreneurs had seen a healthy increase, male rates had only increased by five percent.
Within the last twelve months alone, the rate of women's entrepreneurship has grown by ten percent, while male enterprise has remained at the same rate of 5 per cent.
The steady growth of female entrepreneurs can be attributed to the increased prominence of female role models in business who have made a platform for themselves in the public eye. Dragons Den’s Deborah Meaden and Sarah Willingham are just a couple of examples of female entrepreneurs who have had a positive representation in the media.
Fortitude Plethora’s owner and Managing Director, Toni Stewart is just another shining example of the heights that are being reached in business today by female entrepreneurs.
After celebrating International Women’s Day last week, Toni was delighted by the findings of GEM’s survey. Stewart is passionate about the development of female entrepreneurs. She is keen to share her experiences of building a successful business to inspire other women to do the same and let them know that success is achievable. She says “Successful female role models are imperative if we want to teach the next generation of women that it is possible to achieve your goals and that you can go against the stereotype.”
Growing up in Northern Ireland with her mother and little sister, Toni always had an interest in people and was determined to utilise this to help people and make a difference. Her equal interest in Law and Psychology had her torn when it came to selecting university courses. A BSc in Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice enabled her to combine both interests, and she attended Liverpool John Moore’s University to pursue her fascination with people and the way they think.
In 2012, Toni was offered an entry level sales position in Liverpool and had initially planned to work part-time and study a Master’s degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy. However, she soon realised that she could forge a career in marketing and decided to channel all of her time into learning how to run a business.
Toni is now the owner and Managing Director of the Events Marketing Agency, Fortitude Plethora.
