Amalgam, the Bristol-based company which makes models and unique objects for film, tv and corporate clients, has recently moved into bigger premises to cope with demand for its innovative creative services.

The team which created the master models for Bristol’s Wallace and Gromit art trail, has moved into a new space which is 60 percent bigger on the Lawrence Hill Industrial Park, Bristol.

They were previously working from The Old Sorting Office in Cotham where the company was based for over 25 years.

Director Mike Harvey said: “This is an exciting move for us. Our reputation has grown over many years as we are asked to make large objects, props for tv and film sets so we needed a space which could accommodate our needs with very high ceilings! We also do confidential work for clients therefore need a dedicated secure space to develop objects and work on projects which require complete discretion.”

The move took place recently and marks a milestone in this company’s development. Originally founded in 1984, the company has grown and is known both within Bristol, the UK and internationally as ‘the makers’. Over the last four years, the team has enjoyed growth of at least 22 per cent year on year.

Last year the Amalgam team made the models for the Wallace & Gromit Grand Appeal art trail in Bristol. However, their work covers a broad range of disciplines from prop and scene creation to prototypes and manufacturing, 3D printing through to full project management and design.

Examples include:

*Architectural models - such as the marketing model for the AHH Group’s Platinum Skies retirement living development, a 6-acre regeneration project near Salisbury.

* Marine scale models, including one of the 58m Royal Huisman superyacht, Ngoni.

* Prototypes of all stages, including test rigs or functional models for trade shows or exhibitions, such as the full-size mock-up seats designed for Zodiac Seats UK.

Mike said:It’s great to be at the heart of the South West’s rapidly expanding creative hub, where many companies are becoming known for excellence in innovation. Our own projects span several industries, realising a range of visual and physical displays for businesses developing new products, designs, animation, and broadcast media.”

The new building in Lawrence Hill has more room for the production teams, who specialise in 3D design, prop-making for broadcast media and traditional architectural model making through to product prototyping, 3D printing and electronics.

The premises also has some custom-designed features including:

  • a safe specialist spray painting booth
  • a dedicated CNC machining facility for larger shapes (CNC = computer numerical control)
  • a separate 3D printing room
  • improved facilities for building interactive displays, 3D scanning and electronics
