A group of students working for one of Libya’s biggest oil producers, the Waha Oil Company, have recently successfully completed their HND qualifications in Electrical/Electronic Engineering and Operations Engineering at City College Brighton and Hove. Gary Humphrey, City College’s Curriculum Team Leader for Engineering, says:
"It was impressive enough that these students completed their course in approximately two thirds of the time normally considered appropriate for an HND course but they’d also travelled some fourteen hundred miles to study in a country with a very different culture. Despite that, they adapted very quickly when it came to things like finding accommodation, setting up bank accounts and registering with dentists and doctors before starting their studies.
"Once they’d settled into life at the College, they were required to study at a level which involved complex concepts, analytical techniques and operational methods but it didn’t seem to phase them in the slightest. That says something very special about their abilities and determination to succeed."
Libyan student Khaled Aliwan adds:
"The staff at City College were absolutely excellent and I found my studies here very enjoyable. It was also really nice to spend time in such a wonderful city and the atmosphere at the College was very friendly."
