Guests renting Best View Barn in The Peak District can be confident they won’t be snowed in this winter. The luxury self-catering holiday cottage comes complete with a snow plough, sledges and snowshoes.
The newly converted barn sits on the crest of The Peak District, and as its name suggests, has panoramic views across the Cheshire Plain. Access to the barn is via a steep, mile-long track that was blocked with seven-foot snowdrifts in previous years. This year, owner Harmen Rijks, decided to take action.
"The snow plough attachment for my old Land Rover Defender clears the road perfectly when there’s just a few inches, but it didn’t get through large drifts. This year I’ve built a snow breaker that cuts through large banks of snow. I’ve been using it all week to clear the snow. Guests can have a go. It’s a real boys toy."
Rijks has been following the Met Office’s latest decadal predictions, which suggest that global temperatures over the next five years are likely to be lower than predicted back in December 2011. In the short term, Weather Online Meteorological Services envisage temperatures picking up as we nudge towards the end of January but cold conditions returning again at the beginning of February.
When snow is forecast at Best View Barn, cars are left at a farm in the valley, whilst guests are ferried up the hill in snow-proof vehicles. Once inside the holiday cottage, the mountain adventure continues. To add to the alpine feel, the barn’s living room is decorated in a chalet style, with antique skis hanging on the wall and an old sleigh converted into a coffee table. Guests can borrow sledges and turn the local hills into their personalised Cresta run.
Best View Barn is perched on the edge of The Peak District, equidistant between Macclesfield, Buxton and Congleton. With two double bedrooms and two bathrooms, the self-catering cottage was restored by local craftsmen and fitted out to luxurious standards. The property is a winner of the Worcester Bosch Environment 2020 Award for the installation of its eco-friendly air to water heat pump.
Although the snow can’t be guaranteed, if it does come, guests can be relaxed. There can’t be many holiday homes in Britain that come complete with the services of a snow plough.
