In aid of the Steve Prescott Foundation, Ian Harmon will join a team effort to conquer Kilimanjaro, the world's highest free standing mountain, as part of the You-Are-The-Ref.com Kilimanjaro Challenge.
The Steve Prescott Foundation began fundraising in August 2007 a year after Steve was diagnosed with Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (PMP) a rare form of Cancer, and was given months to live.
Steve played Rugby League for St Helens, Hull, Wakefield, Ireland and was a GB Lions Tourist.
The foundation Steve created raises funds for two organisations which were close to his own heart, The Christie Hospital in Manchester and the Rugby League Benevolent Fund which supports players whose lives have been affected by serious injuries whilst playing Rugby League.
Despite never being involved in climbing before signing up to the challenge, Ian was inspired by his meetings with Steve Prescott and the work that the charity does today in his memory. Ian explains his involvement in the fundraising event:
“Up until signing up, I’d never even climbed a big hill, never mind a mountain, however I’ve been wanting to get involved in one of SPF’s challenges for a number of years and now the timing is right.
I had the pleasure of meeting Steve Prescott on a few occasions and he was such a down to earth, humble guy with a massive heart.
So to be doing this challenge in his memory for the SPF is a huge honour and I will do whatever it takes to prepare for an conquer Kilimanjaro.”
To prepare for the challenge Ian has undertaken serious climbing training including spending 2 days with the Bowland & Pennine Mountain Rescue Team, climbing Mount Snowdon, a climb of Cadair Berwyn the highest significant summit in Wales outside the National Parks, plus a technical climb of the Helvellyn in the Lake District via Striding Edge.
As part of the Mount Kilimanjaro challenge Ian will also participate in a Guinness World Record attempt, for the highest game of football ever played.
The 90 minute game will take place in the crater of Kilimanjaro at 5750m above sea level.
A major part of the climb and football challenge, is to raise money for the Foundation and its worthwhile causes. As an entrepreneur who works with local businesses on their marketing efforts, Ian has created a number of sponsorship packages that offer value to local businesses and help them donate to a great charity at the same time.
3 packages are on offer, Silver, Gold and Platinum. All packages include a flag bearing the sponsoring company's logo being planted on top of Kilimanjaro.
Additional valuable lead generation, marketing and digital consultancy services are included in the Gold and Platinum packages.
