Wiltshire-based crystal and healing specialist, Something Kind of Woo, busts myths around Halloween.

Louise Muir-Sage, founder of Something Kind of Woo in Royal Wootton Bassett, wants to set the record straight about the truth behind commercialised holiday Halloween and get people really thinking the history of October 31.

Halloween has become a day (and night!) of trick-or-treating, horror films, and celebrating the ghoulish aspects of life with supermarkets up and down the country marketing their stock to this ‘scary’ holiday.

Louise’s approach to the Halloween season is different and she wants to bust the prevalent myths of this sweet-riddled ‘celebration’.

Myth 1: Halloween is all about witches, ghosts and scary stuff.

Actually, the roots of Halloween go back to ancient festivals like Samhain – a turning of the seasons, honouring ancestors, and marking the thinning of the veil. It wasn’t about horror films or plastic pumpkins.

Myth 2: If you love spiritual things, you must love Halloween.

Not always! For Louise, spirituality is about light, balance, and healing – not spooky scares. She’d rather focus on crystals, meditation, or moon magic in a gentle way.

Myth 3: Halloween is a “woo” holiday.

Modern Halloween is more of a commercial event. Louise doesn’t dislike it, but she doesn’t celebrate it as part of her practice. Her focus is on the everyday magic of kindness, energy, and wonder – not one night of frights.

“For me, the real beauty at this time of year is in the turning leaves, the cosy nights, and preparing for the darker half of the year with intention and warmth. That’s the kind of magic I love,” said Louise.

Louise shares the ways people can enjoy the fun of Halloween in a spiritual way, rather than as spooky way, through crystals. Her top tips are:

For Protection & Boundaries – black tourmaline, obsidian, or hematite are wonderful for keeping energy safe, especially if you’re around lots of people or children trick-or-treating at your door.

For Honouring Ancestors – amethyst or selenite help create a calm, sacred space if you want to light a candle and spend a moment remembering loved ones.

For Divination & Intuition – labradorite and moonstone are brilliant for connecting with inner wisdom. This time of year is traditionally linked with the thinning veil, so if you’re pulling oracle cards or meditating, these crystals can support your insight.

For Transformation & Play – carnelian and citrine bring courage, creativity, and joy, perfect if you’re dressing up, joining in festivities, or just want to embrace the playful side of the season.

For Grounding with Autumn Energy – red jasper and smoky quartz help you feel rooted, balanced, and ready for the slower, darker months ahead.

Louise has been interested in crystals for many years and in 2024 began running Coffee & Crystal events in collaboration with fellow retailer The Little Gem Café in Royal Wootton Bassett. In July 2025, Louise opened her own shop Something Kind of Woo, and two months later, Something Kind of Woo Too, a space next door for Reiki and spiritual treatments.
