Ridestore Magazine released a study revealing the summer sports which saw an increase in popularity in the UK during the pandemic. Paddleboarding, open water swimming, and skateboarding are among the sports that saw the highest gains.

Social distancing and health-related restrictions forced the outdoor-loving residents of Great Britain to get creative with their outdoor adventures during these unprecedented times. While grassroots team sports were forced to take a back seat, solitary sports saw a huge surge in interest as people languishing during the Covid restrictions took up new activities to blow off steam and keep their mental health in check.

The study focused on data from Google Trends to determine the summer sports that increased in popularity. Google Trends is a website by Google that analyses the popularity of top search queries in Google Search across various regions and languages. The two summer periods prior to the pandemic were analysed against the two summer periods during the pandemic to determine which sports thrived during this time.

Angelica Sykes, Ridestore Magazine editor, explained: "The Ridestore team is obsessed with outdoor adventures and we noticed that most of the team took up new sports over the past two summers, such as road cycling, mountain biking, kiteboarding, skateboarding, etc, and it piqued our interest to see if others also had the same idea."

Angelica continued: "It turns out they did, but we were surprised to see a big increase in popularity of certain watersports in the UK, such as paddle boarding, open water swimming, wakeboarding, surfing, and windsurfing considering how inconsistent our summers are weather-wise. However, not being able to travel abroad for our regular fix of watersports in sunnier climates is also the likely reason too."
