A total of eight exquisite single origin and unique blends from our diverse range have been awarded Gold Stars at the 2013 Great Taste Awards, known as the Oscars of the fine food world.
Consistent recognition over recent years from the expert judging panel, has won a staggering total of 35 gold stars within this time, testament to our high quality and outstanding flavours.
We put our expertly hand-roasted coffees up against 10,000 other products. The Great Taste Awards are the world’s largest and most rigorous food awards scheme involving over 400 judges and thousands of hours of blind tasting.Of special mention is single origin Rwanda Maraba – grown by Abahuzamugambi Ba Kawa Co-operative – which is now a 5-times winner.
Steven Macatonia, Union co-founder comments: ‘We have been sourcing this delicious coffee direct from the Co-operative since 2003, and it’s a brilliant example of how our Direct Trade is benefitting not only coffee enthusiasts here, but also importantly the producer community as well, getting better every year.’
We are meticulous not only in sourcing the finest coffee beans, which are ethically and directly traded with farmers across the globe, but also in our roasting. We roast our gourmet coffees by hand in small batches each day, in order to display the fullest expression of flavour and aroma.
“By hand-roasting our coffees in small batches, we are able to pay close attention to developing the raw potential and individual characteristics of each coffee bean. It is not an exact science; we roast the coffee using all our senses and adjusting the temperature accordingly. It can be a painstaking process, which is why we are delighted the Great Taste Awards have recognised our efforts to give you a fantastic flavour in your coffee cup.”
The eight winners are: Rwanda Maraba Bourbon Coffee and Union Spirit Blend (getting two star awards), Brazil Bobolink, Genesis Costa Rica, Brazil Fortaleza Special Reserve, and blends Bright Note, Organic Natural Spirit and Foundation (getting one star awards).
